When to Enroll in Medicare

When To Enroll in Medicare
If you’re nearing 65 years old, it’s time to start thinking about enrolling in Medicare. There are certain times when you are allowed to enroll, so it’s important to know these dates and enroll on time. There are two time periods when you are able to enroll in Medicare:

Enroll Around Your 65th Birthday

You are allowed to enroll in Medicare three months before your 65th birthday month, during your birthday month, or three months after your birthday month. For example, if you were born on April 5, you could enroll during the months of January, February, March, April, May, June, or July. If you enroll anytime after this time period, you will pay a penalty and pay higher premiums (than if you enrolled on time) for the rest of your life. That’s definitely something you want to avoid. Even if you’re still working and have health insurance through your employer, you still may need to sign up for Medicare, depending on how many employees your employer has.

Open Enrollment Periods

You can enroll in Medicare during the open enrollment period if you missed your initial enrollment time or if you want to change your coverage. This year’s open enrollment period is from October 15th to December 7th. Before open enrollment, find out exactly what it is you need, what kind of coverage you can afford, and what you want on your healthcare policies.
