How to Choose a Hospital

Choosing a hospital can be a difficult decision. You want to get high quality care and be close to home. The Medicare Hospital Compare website allows you to look up ratings of the hospital in certain categories and overall. Hospitals are generally rated on 7 areas:

  1. Mortality
  2. This measures how many patients died, regardless of the reason why, within 30 days of admission to the hospital.

  3. Safety of Care
  4. This measures how many patients get infections while getting treatment in the hospital.

  5. Readmissions
  6. This measures how many patients have to go back to the hospital within 30 days of being discharged.

  7. Patient Experience
  8. This is a national survey that patients take about their hospital experience.

  9. Effectiveness of Care
  10. This measures how often hospitals provide care based on clinical guidelines and whether or not the practices used resulted in the best outcomes for people with certain conditions.

  11. Timeliness of Care
  12. This measures how quickly hospitals give recommended care to patients with certain conditions.

  13. Efficient Use of Medical Imaging
  14. This measures how often hospitals give patients specific tests such as MRI’s and CT scans when they are not necessary under the circumstances.

I didn’t realize that hospitals were rated in these 7 areas. It helps to know about these so that we have something set in stone we can use to compare hospitals to each other. That way, we can do our part in finding a health clinic that we feel we would be most comfortable receiving medical car from when an emergency does arise.
